Spoiler alert! I have been having manic behaviour from my computer recently and now it is refusing to upload my pics which kind of spoils the whole effect of my text. The best laid schemes ......! Anyway I am going to attempt to post this - fingers crossed - and, with luck, we will not remain permanently image-less.
These were two of my sorties into new dishes of
Greek cuisine: the first was beef with
our aubergines and baby onions fresh from Koufovouno, Z’s home area. In
fact, to be exact, they were grown in Georgos’
Pechlivanidis’ bakhste. The
second show meat balls with Briam, a traditional Turkish dish of
roasted, mixed vegetables. I recently
sent a friend a message to tell her what I was cooking, but the spell-check on my
‘smart’ device had us turning cannibal and what
we were having for supper was …… Brian! Anyway, that’s two Turkish words you’ve
learned so far – who can say my blog is not educational!
Rosie and David, recently arrived from Blighty, are tucking into green beans with pork, served with chunks of fresh, brown bread and slabs of feta. Z and I are sampling a very popular summer dish: stuffed peppers and tomatoes. Glad I can’t be held accountable for taking that shot – just as his cheeks were stuffed as well.
But sweets
figure on the menu too: here’s a poolside Pavlova
to round off our evening meal. Rosie has just slathered it with our cherry syrup.
But what’s
this I see, ochone for me? – ‘tis no
vision to make the blood freeze, however, as Andy Stewart sang in ‘Campbeltown
Loch’, for the car thermometer is registering 40o Celsius.
It’s time we thought about keeping hydrated and,
if you are near our mythical mountain, then you can sample a locally dedicated
beer. Our nephew, Nikos, and wife, Foteini, down a local beer with some meze – oops, there goes another one!! – in the shade
of the balcony.
Not such a
clear shot but it’s Z last weekend at Christina’s wedding reception, having a
wee snifter of gum-flavoured Chios
liqueur – lovely idea!
And we’re
not the only dude to get thirsty. Neve, you are undoubtedly the Karpouzi Queen of the family, but Leon is
a strong contender for the male royal title: this is a very special canine karpouzi quaff!
And now I end on a bitter-sweet note: our slurping swallows. All summer they have
delighted us pool-users as they fearlessly swoop and swerve very close, exercising
immaculate aerobatic manoeuvres both to avoid us and get a drink. We love their
company, for not only are they a delight
to watch but they keep our immediate area mosquito-free.
Now we
see them gathering on the wires, preparing to depart as temperatures cool.
They
tell us summer and all her delights are on the way out. :(
